Books, Children and Summer Vacation
It can be difficult to motivate children to read during their summer vacation. Many kids drop the books the at the end of the school year and don’t pick them up again until school begins. Reading is too vital to let this happen. There are many books available in a variety of formats that will entice children to continue to read throughout the summer months.
There are many wonderful books that can be used in conjunction with vacation trips. This is a great way to help children make connections between their world and the print world. Helping a child learn to make connections is a very important strategy in learning to comprehend reading materials. Connections to text, connections to the world and connections to self are all great ways for children to become better readers. The book Using Math Outdoors, by author Amy Rauen and book publisher Weekly Reader is a great book to read with a young child on your beach vacation. The book is a math counting book that is great to read and then follow-up with a fun day on the beach imitating the activities from the book.
